During my semester abroad in Argentina, the students from my program in Argentina went for a weekend to visit the students doing the same program in Chile (the Chileans had come to visit us earlier). It was a great couple of days. We stayed in Santiago, Chile, an urban center. Santiago was bustling, I took a walking tour and went through several markets. The markets were open air, but were contained within structures, and had a variety of fish, fruits, vegetables, and spices.

We also went to Valparaiso, a town on a hill. We took a lovely day-long walking tour up and down the hills of Valparaiso. There we saw the house of poet Pablo Neruda, encountered very colorful houses and murals, and took a cable car ride.

The food was outstanding. In a restaurant within a fish market I tried ceviche for the first time (a bit strong for my taste). The steak was succulent. And the street food - sopapilla (fried pastry) con pebre (tomato, onion, cilantro, merken salsa-like condiment) was delicious.
